Christie’s Monaco fête ses 40 ans

Founded in 1766, Christie’s is one of the leading international auction houses for art and luxury goods. Present in 46 countries in America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, it has sales offices in New York, London, Hong Kong, Paris and Geneva.

This year, Christie’s celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Monaco office. Thanks to the presence of Nancy Dotta, who has been the managing director of the Monaco office for nearly 20 years, Christie’s is developing a network and a strong presence in the Principality to source remarkable works of art and private collections. In March 2025, René Magritte’s La Reconnaissance Infinie from a prestigious collection in Monaco was sold in London for £10.3 million. In October 2023, an iconic painting by Miró, Femmes, Lune, Etoiles from the Colombe d’Or (Saint-Paul de Vence) was sold by Christie’s Paris for €20,750,000.

When the Monaco offices opened on the Rocher in 1985, they generated historic sales for almost 15 years. Among them, the collections of furniture and objets d’art by the greatest fashion designers of the 20th century are particularly noteworthy: an ensemble from the Madame Rochas collection (1990); part of Christian Dior’s collection (1991); and the first sale of Hubert de Givenchy’s furniture and art collection, for which Christie’s Monaco set a new record (1993). Other highlights in the history of the Monegasque auctions include: the 1996 sale of the estate of renowned designer Henri Samuel, a seven-hour marathon auction with a packed saleroom; the 1998 auction of the collection of the famous American fashion photographer Henry Clarke from his villa in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin; and the 2000 auction of Karl Lagerfeld’s collection from his home “La Vigie”.

In the classic car segment, Christie’s Monaco held its first Bugatti and Ferrari sale on May 26, 1987, achieving a European record. There will be more to come, with the acquisition by Christie’s in 2024 of the leading car auction house, Gooding & Compagny.

Christie's - The Great Indoors

Throughout the 20th century and right up to the present day, interior scenes have been a vehicle for a wide variety of artistic expression. Often depicting a studio or a house, they open an intimate window onto the artist’s personal environment. These scenes can be used to contemplate a still life, or to depict friends and family. Some offer a peaceful refuge from the outside world, others are charged with emotion and mystery. For many artists, interiors are the basis for flights of imagination, ambitious formal and stylistic experiments, and a rich dialogue with the art of the past. From acknowledged masters such as Pablo Picasso to contemporary names like Hilary Pecis and Shara Hughes, The Great Indoors explores the central role that interiors have played in the history of art, bringing together works from the last century.
